Blue sky sailing aboard Townshend!

Today was a beautiful sailing day aboard Townshend.  Before leaving the dock we had a group building initiative where some folks could see, others could talk and another couldn’t see — this activity is called “Monkey See, Monkey Do.”  We worked together to locate a hidden object and focused on aspects of teamwork for our Ship’s Article review.  We made it out of Point Hudson Marina under sail.  As the spring progresses, so will our knowledge grow that we’ll need for the longboat journey (May 9th – 12th).  Kelley Watson was again our longboat mate and next week Nancy Israel will be back!

Foul weather day and a guest teacher!

Kelley Watson was a substitute today for Nancy Israel (on vacation).  Even though the wind was blowing a Force 6 on the Beaufort Scale (determined by our students at the beginning of class) and we couldn’t go out on the water, we had a great day anyway.  We reflected on the maintenance and launching of Townshend, we thought back to the beach cleanup and what our next project may be, we went aboard Schooner Adventuress and had a scavenger hunt to learn new vocabulary, we went on a beach walk, and heard progress from Doug Jones on the 80 foot mast being built in our boat shop.  The photos show the diversity of the day.  We are thankful for the sunshine and the good company!

Townshend is launched and Bear is hauled out!

Today was a big day for longboats!  We launched Townshend and hauled out Bear.  We’re excited to get back on the water to prepare for our Journey in May, a four-day longboat trip up to the San Juan Islands.  Thank you to Don Mathrole and Scott Jones for the launching and trailering!

Also, our Port to Port Beach Clean-up was a huge success!  Over 30 people showed up to help and we picked up over a truck bed of trash from the beaches!  Thanks to all those who showed up.  Also a big THANK YOU to Henerey’s Hardware, Sunrise Coffee, Northwest Maritime Center and OCEAN program for your support.

Final Townshend Maintenance Day!

The boat needed one more day of maintenance. Our crew went right to work on various green painting tasks including the floorboards, sheer strake and rudder. We also prepped for and did some varnish work.  It looks fantastic!

Re-launch will happen next Thursday, Feb. 11 at Boat Haven Marina in the afternoon. We’ve even got a ceremony planned with music, readings and decorations.

We are excited for our community beach clean up on Saturday, Feb. 6 from 9-11:30, starting at NWMC. Join us if you can!
